If we are to get a census of the reasons on why people get married, the answers we will get will range from being "in love " to looking for companionship as a result of loneliness.and this reason behind the action of getting married also drives the way people regard the marriage relationship.very few people even in the christian circles understand that marriage is not just based on emotions but a willful covenant between two adults .A covenant (Hebrew berith, Greek diatheke) is a legal agreement between two or more parties it is not based on feelings
Using covenants is how God communicates to us, redeems us, and guarantees us eternal life in Jesus. He does this because a covenant is a promise, and God's promises cannot be broken since they rest in his infinite, pure character. The Bible is a covenant document. The Old and New Testaments are really Old and New Covenants. The word "testament" is Latin for Covenant.You see my dearest ladies if you do not have a basic understanding of what a covenant really is, you will not be able to endure the ups and downs ,the joys and disappointments that are part of every day marriage relationships.there is a pattern to covenants as found in the bible.basically there is a list of obligations to be fulfilled by either party and fulfillment of this obligations is not based on whether you feel like it or not.It is based on a personal commitment irrespective of circumstances that may arise.This tenacity to stick to covenant obligations must be learned in our covenant relationship with God before we can translate it to our relationship with our spouse.It is so sad when you see someone in church that is very zealous for the things of God for some time and after a while, you look around and the person is no longer as zealous as he or she used to be.If you go an extra mile to find out what happened , you will discover that the person is some what disappointed with God and is offended with God probable because something bad may have occurred or a long prayer request had yet to be answered because of this circumstances the person is no longer interested in fulfilling his /her obligation in the covenant relationship with God.If you are still in this group of Christians that only keeps covenant obligations with God only when conditions are convenient then I will advise you to wait a little because you are not yet prepared for a marriage covenant with anybody.
The bible states that wives should honor and be submissive to their husbands as unto the lord.
If you are not ready to be submissive unto God that you do not see even when things do not add up the way you want it how then can you be submissive unto man that you can see.?
In summary, the more you are able to keep covenant with God, the better prepared you will be to keep the marriage covenant
